1. What was the first band you saw live?
Apart from some covers band at my way older cousins’ 21st, it was meant to be Powderfinger and Pollyanna at the Metro, back when the Metro did all ages matinee shows on Sundays, but somehow I ended up with a last minute ticket to see Spiderbait, Something For Kate and, I think, Screamfeeder the week before, also at the Metro. Ah the 90s.
2. What’d you learn from them?
Mainly how to mix corduroy, cons, flannel and brown 70s polyester shirts together. That, and the excellence of strobe lighting.
3. Got any pre-gig rituals?
Nervously pacing around the backstage area, telling the band to relax, and trying to get tipsy without getting drunk.
4. What do you think the most important issue effecting aritsts in NSW is today?
I personally reckon there could be more venues. There’s always a problem with that in Sydney. Also I feel that there’s a real need to build a live music culture here that can outlast fads and scenes and become a part of everyday life. More all ages shows/venues would be great too. I loved going to shows when I was a teenager.
5. If you weren’t a musician what do you reckon you’d be doing?
Well I always wanted to be a music journalist like Nik Cohn, so maybe I’d be trying my hand at that. I mean, there’s still time…
