This year’s inaugural Unsigned Only music competition winners were announced last week, with San Francisco singer Lara Johnston taking home the grand prize.
Unsigned Only is an international music competition that calls upon artists who are not signed to a major label. Johnston’s song “K.I.S.S.” was selected by a celebrity panel of judges, including Cyndi Lauper, Kelly Clarkson, Robert Smith (The Cure), St. Vincent, Kenny Rogers, and 3 Doors Down. After sorting through the 7,500 entries, 22-year-old Johnston was the favorite among the judges, and will now be mentored by top music industry professionals.
In addition to Johnston’s success, Unsigned Only also announced a series of first and second place winners in various music genres. Australians received two first place awards with Jacob Butler from Melbourne winning first place in the Adult Album Alternative category, and Timothy Nelson and the Infidels took first in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category.
