The Sydney Opera House officially announced the program for Vivid LIVE 2012 today which will be held as part of Vivid Sydney between May 5-June 3 at the iconic Opera House.
Considered one of the most important events in Sydney’s cultural calendar, this year Vivid LIVE will showcase 22 events including 11 Australian premieres, 22 world premieres programming an incredible series of performances, exclusive concerts, unique collaborations and one-off projects.
Florence and The Machine will be opening up the festival with the Ceremonial Orchestra, followed up by Vivid LIVE hosting national premieres of two large-scale music productions: Karen O’s psych- opera Stop The Virgens and Amon Tobin’s audiovisual masterpiece Live Beyond 3D. The month long program also features the Australian debut for Janelle Monae & The Archandroid Orchestra, Efterklang, My Brightest Diamond and a unique collaboration between New York’s best creative minds-Bryce Dessner. Sufjan Stevens and Nico Muhly who will perform together in a series of rare concerts.
FBi Radio have teamed up with promoter Penny Drop to present Zola Jesus and Light Asylum, plus Vivid LIVE will invite local labels and promoters to present a series of curated parties at The Studio, such as Niche Productions night of undergound hip-hop featuring debut Australian performances by Detroit’s David Brown and LA’s M.E.D.
Local favourites PVT and Seekae are also part of the Vivid Live program this year, alongside impressive local labels Modular and Future Classic and venue GoodGod Small Club who will be programming their own special nights of live performances.
VIVID Live will come to a close by joining forces with Sydney Film Festival to screen the Australian premiere of Shut Up & Play The Hits-an intriguing documentary documenting LCD Soundsystem‘s Madison Square Garden farewell concert.
And of course, Vivid wouldn’t be Vivid without it’s incredible light and mapping show on the Sydney Opera House sails. This year a new artwork has been commissioned to be created by multi award winning German collective Urbansound.
Besides the music and lights, Vivid Sydney will also feature Vivid Ideas-an 18-day program of public and industry events that will focus on creative ideas, discussion and collaboration. The program will engage with Australia’s creative industries and emerging talent in over 100 different events.
