Arts Minister Simon Crean and the Chair of the Review of Private Sector Support for the Arts, Mr Harold Mitchell AC, today released a discussion paper and invited interested parties to make a submission.
Mr Crean said the Review of Private Sector Support for the Arts will identify any barriers or impediments to private sector support for the arts that may exist in Australia.
“The Australian Government recognises the support of the private sector as vital for both the growth and sustainability of the arts and cultural sector,” Mr Crean said.
“It is important to consider the effectiveness of current measures such as encouraging philanthropy, donations and bequests and possible ways to strengthen the partnership between government and the private sector to create a sound and secure future funding base for arts and culture.
“The findings of this review will assist in the development of policy options aimed at enhancing the private sector’s contribution to the arts. The review will also be an important element in the development and implementation of the new National Cultural Policy,” Mr Crean said.
The discussion paper encourages and assists people to participate in the review. It describes the objectives of the review, details the terms of reference and provides an overview of the current Australian Government measures aimed at facilitating and encouraging private sector involvement in the arts.
“We want to hear the perspectives of a broad range of stakeholders, so I encourage everyone with an interest in this important issue to contribute,” Mr Mitchell said.
The terms of reference for the review and the discussion paper are available at the Office for the Arts website at www.arts.gov.au
The website also provides guidance on how to make a submission.
Submissions close on Friday 8 July 2011. It is expected this review will be completed by the end of October 2011.
