When the Oxford Tavern closed in August 2010 the Wollongong music scene was left without a home in the CBD.
Bands and musicians from across the region are now rallying to discuss the future of live local music in Wollongong, with a free community forum being held at 5 Crown Lane, Music Farmers on Tuesday 19th April 2011.
The forum, titled ‘State of The Music Scene: 2011’, has received widespread endorsement from across the music scene and is supported by Music Farmers, Main Street recording studios and Otis Bar.
The forum will run from 7.30pm to 9pm and features brief presentations by the manager of Unibar, a music scene historian from Steel City Sounds as well as one of Wollongong’s most active music scene advocates.
Presenters will discuss three major issues concerning the music scene and its future. These include Music Venues, Music Scene Advocacy and Music Scene History.
The forum will allow participants to provide feedback and ask questions, and will be followed with performances by local songwriters Bennie James and Sean Stinson.
This community event is ideal for bands, musicians, music businesses and anyone with an interest in the Wollongong music scene. It is open especially to musicians of all genres and lovers of all live original music.
The forum is open to all ages and organisers are hoping to attract attendees from Kiama to Helensburg. It will provide ample opportunities for bands to network and promote development of the music scene.
A post-forum gig is also being held at Otis Bar on Crown Street starting at 9.30pm. The gig is also FREE and includes live bands. The Otis Bar gig is only open to those aged +18.
