Adrian Deutsch has graced the stage supporting some big names such as Franz Ferdinand and The Kaiser Chiefs. His debut LP “Help You!” hosts a desirable disposition of pop, rock and soul.
1. What was the first band you saw live?
Sidewinder at the ANU in Canberra. I was 14 and it blew my mind. Not to mention my ear drums!
2. What’d you learn from them?
I always thought Sidewinder were a really class band. They were doing their own thing and not too caught up in the shadow of grunge. It taught me you just have to follow your own unique instinct and vision and not worry about what people may think of you. You’ll make much better music.
3. Got any pre-gig rituals?
I try and warm my voice up properly these days. When I first started playing I’d just get up there and sing cold. That was fine when you’re a young indie rocker but now my songs have falsetto bits and key changes and I just can’t take the risk of not warming up. Who wants their voice breaking up on stage like an adolescent teenager? Not me! I make sure I’m fed too. I find I get very irrational and touchy on an empty stomach. I try not to talk to people too much. I just relax and look forward to playing.
4. What do you think the most important issue effecting aritsts in NSW is today?
I think it’s important to know how the music industry works and have a plan. The internet and home recording have opened up all these fantastic options that just didn’t exist 10 years ago.
5. If you weren’t a musician what do you reckon you’d be doing?
I went to art school here in Sydney and got my Bachelor of Fine Arts. I’d consider going into gallery or museum work. Also, part of me wants to be a well dressed academic.  Alternatively, friends tell me I could always find work as a stand up comedian but I don’t believe them.
