He once quoted that he “always had the desire to jump on a raft and disappear down a river” (http://www.joshpyke.com), and with the 2008 release of Chimneys Afire, Sydney singer-songwriter Josh Pykes maritime dreams provide distinct and captivating flavour for the album. The beautiful, image-filled sound is created by Pykes folk-inspired fingerpicking guitar style and accompanied by his smooth voice. The mixture of this and Pykes creative use of lyrics allow for vivid imagery and a sense of curiosity and complacency among listeners. Chimneys Afire is Pykes second release with Australian label Ivy League, following the critically acclaimed debut, Memories & Dust. The artist, who has been performing music as early as age 12, has a gift for channeling nature, memories, and stories into song in a very Bon Iver-esque style.
1. What was the first band you saw live?
Motley Crue at the Entertainment center.
2. What’d you learn from them?
That revolving drum cages were cool, and that head banging causes whip lash in 12 year old boys.
3. Got any pre-gig rituals?
For some reason we always sing the Gummy Bears theme song. I don’t know where it started, but it’s a must. That and single malt whiskey.
4. What do you think the most important issue effecting aritsts in NSW is today?
I think the whole issue of intellectual property, and creating more income streams from music used and heard online is a big one not just in NSW but globally.
5. If you weren’t a musician what do you reckon you’d be doing?
Probably learning the guitar, or competing on the TV smash hit, Master Chef Australia.
