SYDNEY LATE NIGHT CULTURE ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES NEW MEMBERS TO THE ALLIANCE - MusicNSW

The Sydney Late Night Culture Alliance was formed in reaction to the recent legislation to lockout the city at 130am, and cease serving alcohol at 3am. These laws are now in effect.

Together with FBi Radio, SLAM, Oxford Art Factory, Goodgod Small Club, The Music.com.au, The Music Network and inthemix, along with input from various other cultural organisations we created the Alliance to unify the voice of Sydney live music venues who would be unfairly regulated because of the new legislation.

We support safe nights in a global city, but based on the evidence, we believe that live music – it’s performers, workers and venues – will be unfairly affected by these new restrictions on trade and service.

The Deloitte Access Economics report of 2011 states that, “Live music venues have been demonstrated to increase feelings of safety in the nighttime environment, improve social bonds, and contribute to overall wellbeing and happiness.”

The Foggo Review of 2012 that assessed the effectiveness of the Liquor Act additionally states, in reference to lockout laws, “The review does not support calls for blanket trading hours or a ’one size fits all‘ policy. Such a measure would unfairly penalise the vast majority of late trading venues that consistently operate within the law and make a positive contribution to the late night economy. The measure would also have a significant impact on local employment and economic activity”

We are pleased to announce new members to the alliance.

These members are showing their support for the Sydney music scene, and together we will be working towards disseminating information to venues, artists and promoters, while strategising the way forward with our lobbying campaign.
