MusicNSW, in partnership with the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), is proud to present our latest free workshop: “Music Publishing 101: Sync Or Swim!”, held at 6.30pm on Thursday 23 May at the APRA offices in Ultimo, NSW.
Licensing songs to ads, film or TV is a lucrative business. This panel will explore the income publishing generates – and what that means for artists. Four of Australia’s leading Publishers will come together to share expertise and discuss industry trends and issues.

Ian James (Mushroom Music Publishing)
Lanie Lane, Birds Of Tokyo, The Rubens, Matt Corby and loads more: Ian James has been Managing Director of Mushroom Music Publishing since 1986. He’s also the Deputy Chairman of APRA and Chairman of the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (AMCOS). Prior to joining Mushroom Music, Ian was at APRA for 10 years, managing the Licensing Department and the Southern Region office.
Marianna Annas (ABC Music Publishing):
An experienced music lawyer, Marianna previously held business affairs roles at major labels (BMG New York and EMI) and is currently the head of ABC Music Publishing. She’s also a Director of AMCOS. Marianna works with Aussie talent such as Ben Salter, The Audreys, Sinead Burgess, Sara Storer and lots of others and score composers such as Paul Healy, Amanda Brown, Adam Gock and more.
Michael Szumowski (Alberts)
AC/DC to Josh Pyke, San Cisco to Gotye: as Alberts’ Head Of Development, Michael – a writer and producer himself – oversees the signing of the company’s new songwriters, as well as the continual development and management of Albert’s existing roster. Michael works with Alberts writers on their creative output… anything from co-writing, producing, mixing or A&R advice.
