The Australia Council of the Arts has funded six record labels (totalling $253,660) as a result of their pilot Recording Initiative Scheme, which is designed to aid labels to develop, produce and market their recordings. Australia Council sorted through 65 applications in total.
Paul Mason, Director of Music states: “It’s no surprise that there was significant interest in these grants – it’s the first time that there’s been a specific funding opportunity for labels,” Mason continued, “The quality of applications was very high, and we were unable to fund all of the excellent proposals we received. The interest in this pilot certainly shows us that we’ll need to look seriously at how to continue supporting this activity into the future.”
5 out of 6 labels are from Sydney. The funded labels are:
Elefant Traks ($50,000 ) for releases by Jimblah, Horrorshow, Joelistics, Sietta, Hermitude, Jane Tyrrell, Sky’High and a remix compilation album.
Hub Artist Services ($50,000) for releases by Dappled Cities, South Seas, Glass Towers, Phebe Starr and Zeahorse.
Darwin’s Skinnyfish Music ($50,000) for music from Ego Lemos, Manuel Dhurrkay, B2M, Worldfly, Tom E Lewis, Dewayne Everettsmith, Narbalek and Gurrumul Yunupingu.
Spunk Records ($48,000) for records by Emma Russack, Firekites, Wagons, Bearhug, Bored Nothing and Holly Throsby.
Siberia Records ($38,000) for Kirin J Callinan, Midnight Juggernauts, FORCES and Erik Omen releases.
4-4-2 Music ($17,660) for releases by Genlevel, Loopsnake, Karoshi and Telafonica.
