Sound Summit festival of independent and innovative music is delighted to announce the appointment of two new Co-Directors. Nic Warnock and Daniel Gottlieb will
work on the 13th annual program of events alongside ongoing Co-Director Brooke Olsen and an expanded team of highly skilled individuals.
Nic Warnock is an extremely active member of the independent music community, having played in numerous bands, coordinated tours and provided design services for artists and events. He is owner of highly successful DIY record label R.I.P. Society which was voted best Independent Record Label in Mess & Noise’s 2011 Reader’s Poll and has released records by Woollen Kits, Royal Headache, Circle Pit and Golden Staph.
Daniel Gottlieb was born and raised in Sydney but has spent extensive periods of time in Washington D.C. and New York. Daniel brings an academic and literary slant to Sound Summit holding various degrees and having worked as a contributing writer to Pitchfork’s experimental music blog, Altered Zones and on the inception of Ad Hoc, a web and print zine with a focus on global grassroots and DIY music communities. Daniel has promoted and curated shows across a number of cities including Washington D.C., Austin (SXSW), New York and Sydney. He broadcasts a weekly program on modern, experimental and psychedelic music called ‘Spiral Sounds’ on 2SER.
Nic and Daniel will work alongside ongoing Co-Director Brooke Olsen of SMAC award winning collective Dirty Shirlows, Fbi Radio Sydney’s ‘Ears Have Ears’ experimental and eclectic music show and AMRAP (The Australian Music Radio Airplay Project).
Together they will curate an exciting 4 day program of events including live music showcases, panels and workshops which will span the length and breadth of the contemporary independent and innovative music community. Sound Summit 2012 will run from 27th – 30th September in Newcastle NSW and alongside TINA (This Is Not Art festival).
Brooke says “Nic & Daniel bring solid curatorial and organizational skills to Sound Summit whilst providing a broader global perspective, enabling us to support even more facets of the independent music both closer to home and further afield”.
Sound Summit 2012 will also feature an expanded team including active Newcastle resident, Rowena McGeoch who has recently worked in event coordinator and volunteer roles for Marrickville Festival, Changing Lanes & Newtown Festival and produces for FBi’s ‘Radiant’ DIY music show. Rowena comes on as Sound Summit Assistant and will focus on increasing Newcastle’s creative communities’ involvement in the festival. Melbourne-based Tim Scott (The Thousands National Music Editor, The Gasometer Booker & Mistletone Tour Manager) will provide national marketing and promotional support to the festival whilst MusicNSW’s Meg Williams (Indent Project Manager, Artist Manager for Megastick Fanfare and Melodie Nelson) will offer additional logistical support.
Under this new structure Sound Summit will be once again housed as a project of MusicNSW, assisting with the festival’s logistical and organisational requirements and contributing to Sound Summit’s highly popular Music Industry 101 panels.
Kirsty Brown, Executive Officer at MusicNSW says: “MusicNSW is proud to continue it’s long association with Sound Summit. We look forward to working with an expanded festival team to support the next exciting phase in Sound Summit’s evolution.”
Musicians and the broader independent music community can apply to be part of the Sound Summit festival through an official call-out scheduled for May for the 2012.
