This year, Sound Summit returns to Newcastle with a 4 day program exploring the best in emerging, experimental and cutting edge ideas around music and it’s many facets.
Sound Summit is proud to announce an expanded musical program, headlined by Moon Duo (USA), featuring Ripley Johnson of Wooden Shjips and Sanae Yamada who formed in San Francisco in 2006, Wet Hair (USA), hailing from Iowa City and releasing on their legendary label Night People, Wet Hair is analog-heavy, tape scuzziness at it’s finest, and MONO (JPN) the iconic Japanese art-metal band who blur the boundaries between noise and neo-classical.
Sound Summit has also announced it’s Festival-Within-A-Festival, “The Clubhouse” which will host the countries most exciting independent record labels and curators in a full day of back to back live performance from R.I.P Society, Spring Break, Bedroom Suck and Ladyz In Noyz. Throughout the festival there will also be a series of showcases from Siberia Records, Dream Damage, Yes Please and Wormwood, celebrating the best of DIY music from around the Australia.
Complimenting this live music juggernaut will be a series of panels exploring the ins-and-outs of the DIY experience, Music Industry 101 workshops to the more advanced Mastering Masterclass, Sound Summit will focus on sharing the knowledge and resources of practitioners and makers exploring new avenues for the production, release and touring experiences faced by independent musicians in the brave new world of the 21st Century music industry.
Hands on workshops will be hosted by the modifying master Cubisteffects, who will lead two practical workshops – including a very exclusive Synth Building Class and a back to basics workshop for the less solder-skilled.
Space Summit is a full day of talks and discussions around new and emerging venue models and Artist Run Initiatives. Featuring panels, industry networking opportunities it will include a range of collectives and collaborators working in indie spaces from Sydney and beyond.
Additionally, Sound Summit looks to enhance the long weekend with a series of relaxing activities. The Sound Summit Record Fair will draw the most exclusive and original record stores from across Newcastle and Sydney in a full day of crate digging, while Rock N Roll Trivia in the Lass beer garden and the ReNew Newcastle Bike Tour should provide plenty of downtime to grab a beer, a much needed bite to eat and experience Newcastle at its best.
Sound Summit takes place on the October Long Weekend in venues in and around Newcastle and is proudly supported by ArtsNSW, The Australia Council for the Arts, MusicNSW, APRA and FBi Radio.
