After a year packed with a massive touring schedule including two national headline tours; Sydney independent hip-hop artist Coptic Soldier is ringing in 2011 with the release of a unique, acoustic hip-hop offering titled: ‘The Sound of Wings 2 (Acoustic)’.
What was the first band you saw live?
A Year 12 rock band in the school hall when I was in Year 5. –Can’t remember their name..
What’d you learn from them?
That no matter how bad your music is, you can always make a crowd laugh. Haha
Got any pre-gig rituals?
Sing one of Phatchance’s choruses over and over… I don’t know why, but it helps me get my voice right.
What do you think the most important issue facing artists in NSW is?
I think the biggest issue as an artist is trying to break through an already over-crowded market, where radio, particularly commercial radio, still prioritises airplay for international artists. Radio still remains the most effective way to break through as an artist and I don’t feel that the Australian radio industry as a whole has the best interest of Australian music at heart. I think their playlists prove this.
If you weren’t a musician, what do you reckon you’d be doing?
Youth work and playing AFL.
