Q Music is acutely aware of the impact of the current flood situation on all aspects of the Queensland community including the music and schools community; we feel it is important for us to move forward with a number of the developmental activities we had planned for 2011. Music is an important part of community life and the engagement with music on all levels is critical to the health of our community and in particular our industry.
In the spirit of moving forward we are pleased to announce an exciting new one day Women in Music (WiM) forum to be held on Tuesday, 8th March at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts.
Delivering a combination of informative panels and practical workshops Women in Music has been designed to inspire, educate and engage, aspiring and emerging female artists and music industry workers. The event was initiated by a focus group of women from the Brisbane music community as a way to increase the level of engagement of young women in the music industry.
Held on the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, WiM will bring together a diverse range of successful female industry practitioners and artists who will share their experiences, skills and knowledge with participants through panels and interactive breakout sessions.
The first speakers to be announced include artist manager (Angus and Julia Stone, Darren Hayes) Cathy Oates, label owner and artist manager (Richard In Your Mind) Julia Wilson, artist manager (The John Steel Singers, DZ) and radio presenter Maggie Collins, triple j Magazine Music Editor Samantha Clode, Queensland Folk Federation General Manager Amanda Jackes and artists Adele Pickvance, Seja and McKisco.
Event organisers have tried to make the event affordable for young people and are encouraging group bookings by offering a big discount on purchases of five or more tickets. Another option for those keen to go but with financial limitations is to enter the Women in Music giveaway.
