Stephen Pavlovic to Curate Vivid LIVE 2011 - MusicNSW

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Fergus Linehan today announced that its winter music festival, Vivid LIVE 2011 will be curated by music impresario Stephen “Pav” Pavlovic, founder of the hugely successful Sydney-based record label, touring company and international brand, Modular People. In its third year, Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House is set to take place from Friday 27 May – Sunday 5 June, 2011 and is the hero event of the annual city-wide Vivid Sydney festival of light, music and ideas.

One of the most inspired and prescient minds in the music industry today, Pav (as he is known in the industry) first came to prominence after securing the first and only Australian tour of legendary Seattle grunge band Nirvana. Since founding Modular in 1998, he has launched Australian bands such as Wolfmother, The Avalanches and The Presets to international success. Pav’s exceptional ability for discovering pioneering artists and predicting music trends, has established Modular as one of the most relevant indie-music labels in the world.

Pav says, “I am extremely honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to create an event in one of the world’s most iconic venues. It’s like I’ve been asked to prepare a 10 course degustation menu of music and art for what is clearly a Michelin starred restaurant”.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Music, Fergus Linehan says “We are all very excited to be working with Steve Pavlovic as curator of the 2011 Vivid Live program. Pav has always had an uncanny knack of pre-empting the most interesting movements in popular culture. Above all he has great taste and personally I love the idea of spending a couple of weeks in the company of artists of his choice”.

Set in one of the world’s most beautiful and iconic buildings, Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House is a festival of music and art that follows the curiosities and vision of a different curator each year, celebrating familiar work, one-off collaborations and experimentation.

The inaugural Festival in 2009 (Luminous) was curated by Brian Eno and was grounded in the idea that great art emerges from collective innovation. For Vivid LIVE 2010 Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed focused on some of the most original figures from Manhattan’s downtown scene with an emphasis on the limits of sonic experimentation.

Vivid celebrates Sydney as the creative hub of the Asia Pacific with large scale light installations and projections; music performances and collaborations; creative ideas, discussion and debate. Vivid Sydney (27 May – 13 June) is one of five signature events on the NSW Events Calendar developed by the NSW Government through Events NSW.
