Radio airplay for the latest singles from the 2010 winners of the New Artist 2 Radio (NA2R) competition, Radio Ink and The Smart, will begin today on commercial radio networks around the country. The radio airplay is part of the winning prize for the NA2R, the Australian radio industry’s search for the next big on-air discovery.

The singles, Physical by Radio Ink and City Lights by The Smart will be played for six weeks, across the day, on the Australian Radio Network, Austereo, DMG Radio, Southern Cross Media, ACE Radio, Prime Radio, Grant Broadcasters, Capital Radio and Super Network.

The airplay is worth around $1.3 million.

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner said this was a fantastic opportunity for the bands: “The period for airplay has been increased from four to six weeks this year to ensure maximum exposure and the opportunity for the bands to really crack the market.”

The two winning bands, Radio Ink, a three piece band from Sydney and The Smart, a four piece band from Brisbane were chosen from 294 entries, based on their commercial radio play potential by music directors from radio stations around Australia.

Judge, Allan Cameron, program director, Macquarie Southern Cross Media, (MACSC) said:”Once again this year, it’s great to see the quality and quantity of new Australian acts, not to mention the diversity of the performers. We are all proud to be part of NA2R and to play our part in giving new Australian music the exposure it deserves on commercial radio. Each year the judging gets harder as more and more of Australia’s best unsigned acts come through in search of their big break.”

Now in its ninth year, the NA2R competition aims to provide an opportunity for the finalists to meet key commercial radio programmers and for the winners to be played on commercial radio throughout the country. The event is open to unsigned, independent Australian artists who have not charted in the top 100 Australian National airplay chart.

Last year’s NA2R winner, Finabah, was the most successful winner so far, gaining impressive chart success with their single “Everyone Jump”, including debuting at #9 on the Air Independent Singles sales chart and peaking at #5 in the Australian artists Top 20 airplay chart. Finabah’s second single, Android Boy, is currently being supported by major metropolitan commercial radio stations across the country.

“The NA2R initiative is one of the many ways in which the commercial radio sector helps nurture and support Australian musical talent,” Ms Warner said.

This year’s winners receive:

  • a share in six weeks of airplay, across the day, on the Australian Radio Network, Austereo, DMG Radio, Southern Cross Media, ACE Radio, Prime Radio, Grant Broadcasters, Capital Radio and Super Network worth around $1.3 million.
  • a digital single distribution deal with MGM Distribution submitted to ARIA and AIR for chart survey.
  • media and marketing advice from VGM (Media & Marketing) consultancy regarding
mainstream media, electronic and digital marketing, radio tracking and artist management
  • as well as design of their single cover for digital radio servicing.
  • the opportunity to perform live in front of key people from the commercial radio and music industries.
  • will be featured in a full page advertisement in The Music Network

“Unearthing and promoting new Australian talent has always been one of the key roles played by commercial radio and this initiative now provides some fantastic tools for unsigned artists to help them break into commercial radio and the music industry,” Ms Warner said.
