The Amp 2007: entries open on Monday 1st October 2007 - MusicNSW

The Australian Music Prize returns with its 3rd consecutive Prize to once again, encourage, reward and promote Australian music of excellence. From Monday October 1 to Friday November 30, Australian artists have the opportunity to enter The Amp 2007 and win the Prize, which comes with $25,000 in cash (provided by PPCA), to be announced in March, 2008. The Amp 2007 will recognise an Australian music artist (or group of artists) for their outstanding creativity. Perhaps more importantly, the winner will gain increased and widespread exposure in the media, at retail and the industry in general as a result from winning this highly respected and coveted prize. With a philosophy of encouraging artists of all types and from all the corners of the nation, The Amps judging criteria is simple. The focus is on creativity, uniqueness and performance, rather than sales or fashion.

Scott Murphy, Prize Director of The Amp 2007 says:
“Its great that for another year, due to the support of PPCA and the Australian music industry overall, were able to assist in the development of great Australian music. The knock on effect for both previous winners – The Drones and Augie March – (not to mention their Short Listed companions) has been tremendous both in Australia and in other key music markets.”

Once again, PPCA (the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia) is the principle partner of The Amp and will provide the $25,000 cash prize for the winner. John ODonnell, PPCA Chairman and Managing Director of EMI Music Australia, explains that PPCAs partnership with The Amp is an integral part of the organisations ongoing strategy to support Australian music and Australian talent.

The Amp 2005 and 2006 were incredible successes. Both Prizes have attracted about 200 artists who entered their albums to be judged by a team of the industrys best music critics, musicians and sales people. The Amp 2005 was awarded to Melbourne band The Drones from a Short List that included the likes of The Go Betweens, The Devastations and Wolfmother.

The Amp 2006s Short List was: Gotye, Jackie Marshall, Bob Evans, Howling Bells, Lisa Gerrard, Sarah Blasko, The Drones, The Grates and Augie March. The coveted Prize was awarded to Augie March for their album “Moo, You Bloody Choir”.

“We are delighted to be able to continue our partnership with The Amp in 2007 – an initiative that truly celebrates and supports great Australian music. Over the past two years, weve been able to recognise two great bands for their creative work and awarded them much needed funds to further their careers.

“Its also through our association with The Amp that weve been able to alert so many artists to the benefits of being registered with PPCA. We distribute half of the net licence fees from Australian recordings directly to Australian artists, providing they have registered with us.” PPCA is a national, non-profit organisation representing the interests of Australian recording artists and record labels. PPCA encourages all recording artists to register to be eligible to share in licence fee revenue collected each year. For more information about PPCA, go to www.ppca.com.au.

Glenn Richards from Augie March:
“How has winning The Amp helped Augie March? Well, for a start I’m writing this from a hotel room in Philadelphia in the middle of a 23 date US tour. These little holidays cost a bloody lot of money and more often than not end up in disaster, animosity, self doubt and very little progress. We’ve found this out before. This time around we not only had a bit of extra petrol money but the added moniker of “Australia’s Finest”. Back home waving that flag would, quite justifiably, invite derision and the odd bottle. Here it’s like Philly cheese to a deep fried bagel. It helps a lot. The Amp is going to help establish Australia once more as a place that fosters considered, intelligent, raw, cultivated, funny, tragic stuff of art. Not just the odd quirky bloke with a schtick, the mute model aspiring to a teen comedy role, or the Akka Dakka cover band. Plus, it shut The Drones up about winning it last year.” Artists can enter by heading to website: www.australianmusicprize.com.au
